CHAPTER V - Of the girl who makes the conquest of a husband.

When a girl provided with good qualities, with a good education, belongs to a family without position, and, for this motive, is not looked for in marriage by the members of her caste; either when a girl who observes the rules of his ( her ? ) family and its caste, is an orphan and without relatives ( parents ? ) who take charge of her, she has to look herself to get married when the moment came.

She ( It ? ) will try hard to make the conquest of a strong young man and a good appearance ( mine ? ), either a man on whom, by her feeble-mindedness, she hopes to decide to get married to her, even without the assent of the relatives ( parents ? ) of the young man.

She ( It ? ) will use ( employ ? ) all the means to captivate him ( it ? ) and will see him ( it ? ) and will maintain him ( it ? ) frequently. His ( her ? ) mother also will use his ( her ? ) friends and her foster sister to bring frequent meetings, either at his ( her ? ) friends, or somewhere else, with the desired husband. The girl, from his part, will try to be alone with him, under cover and not disturbed, and, from time to time, will make for him ( her ? ) presents of flowers, flavors and nut and sheets ( leaves ? ) of bétel.

She ( It ? ) will show him ( her ? ) the talents which she ( it ? ) possesses, such as those to mass ( massage ? ), to graze and to be urgent with nails; will cause with him things which please him ( her ? ) or interest him ( her;it ? ), and even will discuss with him ways, and means to gain ( win ? ) the heart of a girl. The former ( ancient ? ) authors are of opinion that the girl, even when she likes ( loves ? ), does not have to make the first advances; she only has to encourage the man who looks for her ( it ? ), to allow him ( her ? ) some privautés and to receive the demonstrations of his ( her ? ) love without appearing to notice its passion.

When he ( it ? ) will try to take kisses, she ( it ? ) will not lend itself to it first of all; when he will ask him ( her ? ) for the union, she ( it ? ) will not grant ( agree ? ) on it; she will allow him ( her ? ) only, while making many difficulties, touches in her hidden parts ( parties ? ), and will resist to quite other attempt.

It is only when she ( it ? ) will be very sure of her ( its ? ) love and her ( its ? ) tried and tested constancy which she ( it ? ) will grant to give itself to him if it is decided to get married in succession to her (App. 1).

When she ( it ? ) will so have lost her ( its ? ) virginity, she ( it ? ) will make the confidence to his ( her ? ) friends [ 43 ].

[ Note 43: doubtless to notify his ( her;its ? ) marriage. In that case, as in all the others, the sexual intercourse precedes the religious consecration; the real sacrament for the Hindus appears to be the promise of the marriage cemented by the sexual intercourse which is necessary and sufficient ( self-important ? ) to assure ( insure ? ) the execution of the promise.]
