CHAPITRE III - Pressures and frictions (App 1), scratches, marks ( brands ? ) made with nails.
Generally, the marks ( brands ? ) with nails are printed on armpits, throat ( breast ? ), bosoms, lips, Djadgana or environment ( middle ? ) of the body, and thighs.
They are, as well as the bites, singular, often affected testimonies of love, between very fascinated lovers; they give them themselves to the first meeting, at first for a journey, on the way back, during a reconciliation, finally when the woman is in a some drunkenness.
We make with nails eight marks ( brands ? ), by scratches or pressures: the sound, the half-moon, the circle, the line ( feature ? ) of the nail or the claw of the tiger, the paw of peacock, the jump of the hare, the sheet ( leaf ? ) of blue lotus.
The sound is made by pressing the chin, the bosoms, the lower lip or the Djadgana, rather slowly to make no mark ( brand ? ) or scratch, and only so that hairs bristle ( make angry ? ) in the contact of the nails the scratching of which we hear ( understand ? ).
A lover so uses ( wears out ? ) it with a girl, when he masses ( massages ? ) her ( it ? ) or grazes him ( her ? ) slightly the head and enjoys disturbing her ( it ? ) in the terrible.
The half-moon: the curve of a single nail which we print on the neck or the bosoms.
The circle: all two opposite half-moons. This mark ( brand ? ) is usually made on the navel, in the small hollows which form around buttocks in the straight ( right ? ) station, in aînes.
The line ( feature ? ): a small line ( feature ? ) of nail which we print on a some part ( party ? ) of the body.
The claw of tiger: line bends drawn on the breast.
The paw of peacock: curve similarly drawn on the breast with five nails; the one who makes a success of her ( it ? ) is considered as an artist.
The jump of the hare: the mark ( brand ? ) of five nails is made near a button of the breast.
The sheet ( leaf ? ) of blue lotus: marks ( brands ? ) made on bosoms or hips in the form of sheets ( leaves ? ) of lotus.
There are still the other marks ( brands ? ) and even in unlimited number; because, says a former ( ancient ? ) author: « the art to print the marks ( brands ? ) of love is familiar to all. » (App. N°2).
Vatsyayana adds: « as well as the variety is necessary in the love, the variety, in his turn, engenders the love.
That is why the courtesans, who ignore nothing of it which concerns the love, are so desirable.
We do not make marks ( brands ? ) with nails on the married women; but we can make particular marks ( brands ? ) on the parts ( parties ? ) hidden from their body, as recollection and to increase the love.
Marks ( Brands ? ) of the nails even former ( old ? ) and almost erased call back ( remind ? ) to a woman and wake her love which, or, could get lost completely.
A young lady on the bosoms of whom appear these imprints impresses even a foreigner who perceives them at distance.
A man who carries ( wears ? ) marks ( brands ? ) of nails and teeth succeeds with the women, even those who are rebel in the love.
