CHAPITRE II - Embraces or embraces.

The embraces to show a mutual love, are four sorts: by the touch, by the penetration, by the friction or the friction, by the pressure.

The first one takes place when a man, under a some excuse, takes place close or in front of a woman, so that both bodies contact.

The embrace by penetration occurs when, in a solitary place, a woman bends to take some object, and penetrates, so to speak, of her bosoms into the man who, in his turn, seizes her ( it ? ) and presses her ( it ? ) [24].

[ Note 24: this passage makes suppose that when wrote Vatsyayana the women went the bare breast, as it takes place even today in some low castes and for Pariahs. In certain paintings or very former ( old ? ) sculptures, we see the women, even that of king, with the bare throat ( breast ? ).]

These first two sorts of embrace are made between persons who cannot see itself and speak to itself freely.

The third embrace takes place when two persons who walk slowly, in the darkness, or in the solitary place, rub their bodies the one against the other one.

When, in the same circumstances, one of the lovers presses strongly the body of the other one against a wall or a pillar, it is the embrace by pressure.

These last two contacts are made of a common agreement.

In a meeting, we are engaged ( surrender ? ) in the partial embraces, the face against face, breast against breast, Jadgana against Jadgana (part of the body included between the navel and the thighs), thighs against thighs, and in the embraces of all the body, with any sorts of preciousness, the woman letting float her scattered hair.

These embraces carry ( wear ? ) the following names: 1 ° that some ivy; 2 ° that of the rock-climber in the tree; 3 ° the mixture of the sesame with the rice; 4 ° that of the milk and the water.

In both first ones, the man is standing up; both last ones are a part of the connection.

1 ° The woman encloses the man as the ivy the tree; she ( it ? ) tilts the head on his for the kiss by pushing small shouts: knew, knew; she ( it ? ) interwines ( embraces ? ) him ( it ? ) and looks at him ( it ? ) lovingly.

2 ° The woman puts one foot on the foot of the man and the other one on the thigh, she crosses ( spends ? ) one of the arms around the back and the other one on the shoulders, she sings and coos slowly, and seems to want to climb to pick a kiss.

3 ° Contact: the man and the woman are lying and embrace each other so strictly as thighs and arms interlace as two lianas and rub themselves so to speak.

4 ° The man and the woman forget everything in their transport; they are afraid and do not feel ( smell ? ) either pain, or wounds; penetrating mutually, they do not form more that a single body, a single flesh, is that the man holds the woman sat ( based ? ) on the knees, or aside, or opposite, either on a bed.

A poëte formulated this aphorism on the subject:

« It is good to educate itself and to converse on the embraces, because it is a means to create the desire; but, in the connection, it is necessary to be even engaged ( to surrender ? ) to those whom Kama Shastra does not mention, if they increase the love and the passion. »

We observe the rules of Shastra as long as the passion is moderated; but when once the wheel of the love turns, there is more neither Shastra nor order to be followed.
